Consultation times can vary depending on the nature of the ailment. The first appointments is often longer than a standard treatment as a case history needs to be taken, this enables me to gain all information necessary to treat you.

First consultations usually take between one and two hours, during this time a full medical history is be noted. Follow-up treatments take up to an hour. During a treatment I use diagnostic techniques such as tongue and pulse
examination. These techniques give me information about the health of an your internal organs and general energy.

Treatment involves the use of disposable acupuncture needles, which are new for each patient and each treatment. I feel the term 'needle' is not such a good word, acupuncture needles are a fraction of the size of needles used for sewing or injections. Needles are inserted at specific points along the Meridians (channels) just under the skin to stimulate, disperse and balance the flow or energy. Alongside the needles, other techniques that I use include:

Cupping - to stimulate the flow of energy and substance. There is evidence to suggest that this technique has been used traditionally in the home not only in Asia, but also Eastern Europe. It can be used for musculo-skeletal complaints (it has been compared to the equivalent of five hours' worth of deep tissue massage) and also for more systemic conditions.

Moxibustion - involves smouldering the herb mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years. The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi (energy), and maintain general health.

Gua Sha - a technique used in Asia by practitioners of Traditional Medicine in both the clinical setting and in homes, but little known in the West. It involves palpation and cutaneous stimulation where the skin is pressured, in strokes, by a round-edged instrument. This results in the appearance of small red petechiae called 'sha', which will fade in 2 to 3 days.
